City of Gulf Breeze Mayor

Doug Underhill

The City of Gulf Breeze is honored to serve as the host site for the 2017 FishingforAHERO Rodeo. There are nearly 800 veteran heroes living in the City of Gulf Breeze. That number reflects nearly 800 families who know what it is to celebrate a holiday without a father, mother, brother, sister, or friend. There are approximately 22,000 veteran families living in Santa Rosa County. These local families know what it is to experience life milestones yet feel the absence of a loved one, because their loved one is halfway around the globe building roads, schools, alliances and fighting for our freedom.

Veterans return home to families and communities that need them, and yet they are forever changed by conflicts far from our shores. Organizations such as America's Heroes Enjoying Recreation Outdoors and efforts like the FishingforAHERO Rodeo give our community the opportunity to show thanks by helping meet the spiritual, emotional and physical needs of our veterans and their families. We are forever in debt to the sacrifice of our veterans for our freedom and liberty.

No matter how hard we try, no matter the experience we have overseas, a veteran does not return to life back home unchanged. In many ways we are stronger, better and more resilient, but in other ways we are more vulnerable, and these vulnerabilities often go unseen – even by those closest to us.

The most important things a returning vet can do are to stay active, stay engaged in his or her environment and community and to connect with others like us. This is the service that AHERO provides to our heroes. They create opportunities for our heroes to enjoy the America that they sacrificed so much to defend.

Escambia County is honored to be the backdrop for AHERO's program of service. We are a premier destination for anyone to live, work and play, so what better location to provide those great life experiences? We pray that the experiences our veterans have in Escambia will help remind them that the life and lifestyle they have secured for us, is still full of opportunity for them."

SRIA Executive Director & Director of Environment / Development Services

Paolo Ghio

It’s never an imposition to communicate the love and respect we at Santa Rosa Island Authority have for our armed forces, Veterans and those currently serving.

We are especially honored to be included in the company of the AHERO establishment and it really doesn’t matter where the Rodeo launches from, Pensacola Beach becomes the HQ when they come back to port. We have been blessed to have many Vets find a place of comfort on this tiny island and I am always humbled to be asked to be part of this brotherhood that is the AHERO gathering.

The SRIA thanks AHERO and its all-volunteer staff, for your continued dedication and selflessness in embracing the values and creed that makes AHERO. This has become a gift for those that it helps and those who help. The SRIA continues to stand beside you in support of your mission."
